‘Painting’ with Graphite

Introduction

Since I began drawing, I have always utilized graphite powder and paint brushes as my primary tools. This technique stemmed from the first drawing set I bought, which had a sanding block. The graphite powder I used was a byproduct of sharpening my pencils with the sandpaper.

Technique

While the specifics of all drawings differ slightly, I generally follow two methods: working in a subtractive manner with graphite powder and erasers, or with normal pencils, utilizing the graphite powder to block-in large areas.

Here are some examples of what the former technique looks like:

Bob Dylan- Graphite Powder on 11″ x 14″ Paper
Harold Ramis- Graphite Powder on 11″ x 14″ Paper

…And the latter technique

Joni Mitchell- Graphite on 11″ x 14″ Paper
